Rackmounted

Built for installation in a standard equipment rack used in server or network rooms.

Rackmounted means equipment is built to be installed in a standard 19-inch rack, the metal frame commonly used in server rooms, network closets, and data centers. Switches, firewalls, servers, and storage appliances are often rackmounted so they can be organized, cooled, powered, and cabled in a predictable way.

In cyber security, rackmounted hardware matters because it is usually part of the physical attack surface as well as the network one. A rackmounted switch may carry production traffic, provide Power over Ethernet to cameras or access points, and sit in a shared space that can be inspected, unplugged, stolen, or tampered with. Defenders use rackmount form factors to centralize logging, redundant power, and maintenance, while attackers may target exposed racks, disable power, or connect rogue devices. The term does not describe a security feature by itself; it describes the installation format that shapes how the device is deployed, monitored, and protected.
