Quartermaster

A broker-style support role that helps organize reconnaissance, proxy management, and routing.

In cyber espionage, a quartermaster is a broker-style support role that helps organize reconnaissance, proxy management, and operational routing. It is not usually the malware or the final intrusion point; instead, it is the infrastructure layer that keeps traffic moving through intermediate systems, rotates paths, and helps operators blend in.

This matters because many attacks depend on logistics as much as access. A well-run quartermaster function can make scanning, target profiling, and command traffic harder to trace back to one source, while also helping operators recover when defenders block a relay or flag a node. For defenders, signs of this layer include unusual outbound routing, repeated use of proxy networks, and infrastructure that changes quickly. Disrupting the quartermaster role can slow multiple operations at once, even if the attackers still have other tools available.
