Push Messaging

App-delivered notifications sent over the internet to a device, often used for urgent alerts.

Push messaging is the delivery of notifications from a server to a device over the internet, usually through a mobile app and a push service such as APNs or FCM. Unlike email or SMS, the message is tied to an application account and a live data path, so it can reach users quickly with urgent alerts, login prompts, or security warnings.

In cyber security, push messaging matters because its reliability depends on network access, backend availability, and correct device registration. Attackers may abuse it for phishing-like prompts, fake security alerts, or notification spam designed to train users to click without checking. Defenders use it for time-sensitive warnings such as account-risk alerts, MFA approvals, and emergency notices. In restricted or degraded networks, push messages may arrive late or not at all, so security teams should treat them as a fast channel, not the only one, and pair them with SMS, broadcast, or offline fallback methods.
