Pure-play

A business focused on one main category instead of a broad mix of services.

A pure-play business focuses on one main product line, market, or industry instead of spreading across many unrelated services. In cybersecurity, a pure-play vendor might sell only endpoint protection, threat intelligence, or security training, while a broader company may bundle those tools with cloud, networking, or consulting services. The term can also apply to publishers, event producers, and media outlets that concentrate mainly on cybersecurity rather than covering many sectors.

This matters because specialization often shapes incentives, expertise, and trust. A pure-play security company may move faster on a narrow problem and build deeper technical credibility, but it may also have a more limited viewpoint. In attacks, defenders often compare pure-play vendors when choosing tools for a specific control area. In defenses, analysts may prefer pure-play sources for focused threat briefings, yet still check whether commercial goals could influence what is promoted. The key idea is focus: a pure-play organization is defined by what it centers on, not by whether it is automatically more accurate or independent.
