Public access

Permission for outsiders to view or use a resource without special approval.

Public access means a resource is available to outsiders without special approval. In cyber security, that resource might be source code, a file share, an API, a dashboard, or a document repository. Public access is not automatically unsafe, but it changes the trust model: anyone can inspect, copy, test, or sometimes modify what is exposed. That makes access control a key security control, because the wrong permission can reveal sensitive data or administrative functions.

Defenders use public access carefully to support transparency, collaboration, and independent review. Open code can help researchers spot bugs, unsafe defaults, or exposed secrets before attackers do. Attackers, however, also look for public access as an entry point, since exposed services and files often contain clues, credentials, or vulnerable features. Good security practice is to limit public exposure to what is truly intended, then back it up with logging, review, and strong change control.
