A proxy interview is a job interview attended by one person on behalf of another, usually to defeat identity checks in a hiring process. The person on camera may be a stand-in, while the real applicant stays hidden and later takes over after access is granted.
This matters in cyber security because hiring is part of the attack surface. If an attacker can pass screening with a proxy, they may inherit trust, receive accounts, devices, or internal access, and then use those privileges for fraud, data theft, or persistence. Defenders look for mismatched photos, locations, documents, payment details, and speaking patterns, and they may require live verification, stronger document checks, and delayed access before onboarding. In practice, proxy interviewing is a social-engineering control bypass aimed at identity assurance rather than at technical systems.
