Provider-based architecture

A design that separates cryptographic implementations into selectable modules.

Provider-based architecture is a design pattern that separates cryptographic functions into modular providers that can be selected at runtime. Instead of one fixed implementation for every algorithm, the library exposes a framework and loads the needed modules for tasks such as encryption, hashing, key handling, or certificate operations.

This matters in cyber security because it changes both attack surface and defense workflow. A flaw in one provider may affect only certain algorithms or deployment modes, while missing or swapped providers can break expected security features. In systems like OpenSSL 3.x, defenders must verify not only that the library is patched, but also that the correct providers are present, enabled, and compatible after an update. Attackers may try to abuse weak, legacy, or misconfigured providers, while defenders use the model to isolate functionality, support FIPS-approved modules, and reduce exposure by loading only trusted implementations.
