Protected Process Light (PPL)

A Windows protection model that restricts tampering with sensitive processes such as anti-malware services.

Protected Process Light is a Windows protection mode that makes selected processes harder to inspect, tamper with, or inject code into. It is commonly used for security-sensitive services, especially anti-malware and endpoint protection components. Windows enforces extra access checks so even many privileged tools cannot easily open these processes with dangerous rights.

PPL matters because it helps preserve the trust boundary around defensive software. If malware can modify or inject into an EDR or antivirus service, it may disable monitoring, hide activity, or reuse the service’s privileges. In real attacks, adversaries may try to reach PPL indirectly by abusing a trusted security agent, weak configuration, or exposed administrative interfaces rather than attacking the kernel. Defenders should protect the surrounding control plane too: tighten local admin access, monitor service changes, and verify that anti-tamper and update paths cannot be repurposed to reach protected processes.
