Proprietary model

A model controlled by a vendor, usually accessed through a managed service or API.

A proprietary model is an AI model controlled by a vendor and typically delivered through a managed service or API. Users do not get the full model weights or direct control over the runtime, which means the provider decides how the model is hosted, updated, rate-limited, and monitored.

In cyber security, this matters because a vendor-managed model can reduce operational burden, but it also concentrates trust. Security teams must consider data handling, retention, logging, access control, and whether prompts or outputs may be exposed to third parties. Proprietary models appear in real deployments where organizations want strong performance without managing infrastructure, but they still need testing for prompt injection, unsafe tool use, and governance gaps. A higher benchmark score does not guarantee a safer or better-fit deployment.
