Proprietary data

Information created or owned by an organization that can become distinctive when published publicly.

Proprietary data is information created or owned by an organization that gives it a business or technical advantage. It can include internal reports, source code, threat intelligence, customer records, product designs, telemetry, or unpublished research. In cyber security, this data is sensitive because it often reveals how a system works, what assets exist, and where weaknesses may be found.

Attackers value proprietary data for reconnaissance and extortion. A leaked design document can expose architecture details, while stolen logs or code can reveal credentials, endpoints, or security controls. Defenders treat it with classification, least-privilege access, encryption, data loss prevention, and careful publishing rules. When organizations choose to publish some proprietary data publicly, they usually redact secrets and limit the release to facts that are safe to share. That can support trust and analysis, but once information is public it can also become easier for adversaries and AI systems to retrieve and reuse.
