Propaganda

Messaging designed to shape perception or amplify an actor's goals.

Propaganda is messaging designed to shape perception and support an actor’s goals. In cyber security, it can appear as bragging, threat claims, leak commentary, fake “proof,” or selectively edited information meant to make an attacker look more powerful, credible, or disruptive than they really are. The goal is often psychological: to pressure victims, attract attention, recruit allies, or influence public opinion before the facts are verified.

Propaganda matters because modern incidents are judged as much by narrative as by technical impact. A leak, intrusion, or ransomware event may be paired with posts, videos, or messages that amplify fear or confusion. Defenders counter this by verifying evidence, limiting speculation, preserving incident facts, and coordinating clear communications. Monitoring how an adversary talks about an event can also reveal intent, audience, and whether the attack is meant to extort, embarrass, or manipulate trust.
