Proof-of-age

Evidence that a user meets an age requirement, used to enforce restricted access.

Proof-of-age is evidence that a user meets a minimum age requirement before a service grants access. It can be a government ID check, a verified account record, or a privacy-preserving age token from a trusted provider. The goal is not just to ask for a birthdate, but to support an access control decision that the platform can trust.

In cyber security, proof-of-age matters because age gates protect minors from restricted content, contact, or transactions in social apps, games, chat systems, and betting services. Weak proof-of-age can be bypassed with fake dates, shared accounts, stolen documents, or automated identity fraud. Stronger defenses use layered controls: minimal data collection, verified age claims, fraud detection, and tighter defaults when age is uncertain. As a control, proof-of-age is only useful if it is accurate, hard to spoof, and matched to the risk of the service.
