A prompt template is a reusable instruction pattern used to shape how an AI system responds. Instead of writing a one-off prompt each time, an application fills variables into a predefined template to guide the model’s behavior, tone, scope, or output format.
In cyber security, prompt templates matter because they often sit inside workflow engines, gateways, and agent systems that handle sensitive data or trigger actions. If a template can be influenced by a user, an attacker may inject malicious instructions, alter downstream tool calls, or push the AI into unsafe behavior. Defenders treat templates as security-sensitive code: they validate inputs, separate untrusted content from control instructions, and restrict what the workflow can reach. In self-hosted AI platforms, weak template handling can become a path from a simple request to command execution or data exposure.
