Promotional code

a code used to activate a discount or bundled benefit.

A promotional code is a short token entered into a website, app, or billing system to unlock a discount, free trial, bonus service, or bundled feature. In consumer services, it often acts as a simple entitlement key: if the code is valid, the account gets the promised benefit.

In cyber security, promotional codes matter because they are a control point that can be guessed, leaked, shared, or reused. Attackers may try code enumeration, automate submissions, abuse public coupon codes, or use social engineering to obtain a valid code. Poorly designed promo systems can also be exploited through replay attacks, lack of expiry, or missing account binding. Defenders reduce risk with unique one-time codes, rate limiting, fraud monitoring, expiry rules, server-side validation, and logs that show who redeemed what and when. In short, a promo code is small, but it can expose real business value if entitlement checks are weak.
