Programmatic advertising is the automated buying and selling of ads through software platforms instead of manual deals. In a typical flow, ad exchanges, demand-side platforms, supply-side platforms, and tracking tags exchange bids and audience data in milliseconds. That speed is useful for monetization, but it also means user-level signals such as device IDs, location hints, or inferred interests can be copied to many parties very quickly.
In cyber security, this matters because adtech pipelines can become a data-exposure path even when there is no breach or malware. Sensitive attributes may be inferred from apparently harmless signals, and poor vendor control can send them beyond the original purpose. Defenders reduce this risk by auditing SDKs and ad tags, minimizing data sharing, restricting onward transfers, and documenting lawful processing. Attackers and shady brokers may abuse the same machinery for tracking, profiling, or covert data collection.
