Programmatic ads are online advertisements bought and placed automatically through real-time bidding platforms. Instead of a human reviewing every creative and destination, ad exchanges match buyers and publishers at machine speed, using targeting signals and automated auctions. This makes ad delivery efficient, but it also creates a fast-moving trust layer that can be abused.
In cyber security, programmatic ads matter because attackers can buy legitimate inventory or compromise ad chains to deliver malvertising, redirects, or phishing pages. The user may only see a familiar brand while the ad network routes them to a malicious site. Defenders watch for suspicious creatives, unusual landing-page behavior, and unexpected redirects from ad tags. Browser telemetry, ad-fraud controls, and tighter review of high-risk campaigns help reduce exposure. The key risk is speed: abuse can scale before manual checks catch it.
