Production workflow

A live business process where a system affects real decisions, outputs, or transactions.

A production workflow is a live business process where software, automation, or an AI system affects real decisions, outputs, or transactions. Unlike a test or pilot environment, it sits on the path to actual business action: approving a payment, routing a ticket, updating inventory, or flagging a case. In cyber security, that makes it a high-value target because changing the workflow can change the business result.

Attackers may try to abuse a production workflow by altering data, inserting malicious inputs, hijacking accounts, or tampering with the logic that feeds decisions. In AI systems, prompt injection, data poisoning, or model manipulation can push bad outputs into operational use. Defenders reduce risk with access controls, approval gates, logging, monitoring, change management, and rollback plans. The key question is whether the workflow can be trusted when real money, real users, or real operations depend on it.
