Product security is the practice of protecting a software product’s features, architecture, configuration, and default settings across its full life cycle. It starts before release, when teams design permissions, data flows, APIs, and update paths, and continues after release through patching, hardening, and monitoring.
It matters because many serious weaknesses are built in early: insecure defaults, broken access controls, exposed secrets, weak dependency choices, and flawed trust boundaries. Attackers often exploit those design and implementation errors rather than relying on a single bug. Defenders use threat modeling, secure-by-design reviews, code scanning, testing, and safe defaults to reduce risk before software reaches users. In modern environments, product security also has to account for AI-assisted development, where code and configuration can move faster than manual review unless controls are built into the pipeline.
