The product lifecycle is the full span of a product’s life, from design and development through release, maintenance, updates, and eventual retirement. In cybersecurity, this matters because security controls cannot stop at launch. Vulnerabilities may appear later, dependencies may change, and support gaps can leave users exposed if patching or incident response is weak.
Attackers often target weak points in the lifecycle, such as insecure design choices, vulnerable third-party components, delayed updates, or abandoned products that no longer receive fixes. Defenders use the lifecycle to organize security work: threat modeling during design, secure coding and testing during build, patch management after release, and safe decommissioning at end of life. A strong lifecycle approach helps prove compliance, reduce risk, and keep security responsibilities clear over time.
