Procurement lifecycle

The full buying process, from defining requirements to contract management and renewal.

The procurement lifecycle is the full buying process: defining requirements, evaluating vendors, awarding the contract, managing delivery, and renewing or replacing the service. In cybersecurity, it matters because many risks are decided before a product is deployed. Security features, patching obligations, support terms, data handling, and audit rights can all be fixed in the contract, shaping how resilient the final system will be.

Attackers often exploit weak procurement choices indirectly, such as insecure defaults, poor update support, or unvetted third parties. Defenders use the procurement lifecycle to reduce that exposure by demanding security evidence, comparing suppliers with risk criteria, and making maintenance and incident response part of ongoing contract management. In sectors like healthcare, this can be critical: the buying decision can affect both data protection and service continuity for years after purchase.
