A processing chain is the sequence of people, companies, and systems that handle data from one step to the next. In a simple case, a controller sends data to a processor, which may use subcontractors, cloud services, or support teams before the task is finished. Each handoff changes who can see, store, transform, or transmit the data, so the chain defines both the workflow and the exposure.
In cyber security, the processing chain matters because weak links create risk. A compromised vendor, misconfigured service, or careless subcontractor can leak data, alter records, or bypass controls. Attackers often target the least-protected actor in the chain rather than the main organization. Defenders reduce that risk by mapping all data flows, limiting access, requiring clear instructions, checking logs, and monitoring third parties so that responsibility does not disappear when work is outsourced.
