The Process Scheduler is the PeopleSoft subsystem that launches, queues, and tracks scheduled batch processes. It handles the lifecycle of a request from submission to execution, recording states such as queued, initiated, processing, and completed. In practice, it is the control point that decides when a report, integration, payroll task, or maintenance job actually runs.
In cyber security, this matters because scheduled work is both business-critical and a potential target. Attackers who gain administrative access may try to alter run controls, disable recurring jobs, delay processing, or abuse scheduled tasks to execute code at trusted times. Defenders use the scheduler to spot missed runs, unusual queue delays, unexpected retries, and jobs that succeed too late to meet a business deadline. Monitoring the scheduler’s timing and state data helps distinguish normal backlog from tampering or service degradation.
