Process discipline is the practice of following a workflow in a consistent, verified order: gather the right inputs, check assumptions, perform each step carefully, and confirm the result before moving on. In cyber security, this matters because many failures come from skipped or rushed steps, not just from weak technology.
Attackers also benefit from process discipline when they run phishing, malware delivery, credential theft, or data theft in a repeatable way that reduces mistakes and improves reliability. Defenders use it in patch management, access reviews, incident response, and backup testing to keep systems auditable and dependable. Without it, teams are more likely to leave gaps such as unverified configurations, orphaned accounts, incomplete containment, or backups that fail when needed.
