Pro bono means professional work provided without charge, usually to support a cause, nonprofit, or community organization. In cyber security, it often takes the form of donated assessments, configuration help, training, or incident-response guidance from engineers, consultants, or vendors.
It matters because many smaller organizations still handle sensitive data and public-facing services, but lack the budget for a full security team. Pro bono support can help them reduce risk by improving controls such as multi-factor authentication, backups, access reviews, and patching. That can lower exposure to common attacks like phishing, account takeover, and ransomware. Good pro bono work should also have clear scope, permission, and data-handling rules so the help strengthens security instead of creating new gaps.
