A privileged app is a system application that is installed as part of the device image and granted elevated permissions that ordinary user-installed apps do not receive. On Android, these apps usually live in trusted partitions such as system or product and may have access to restricted APIs, protected settings, or signature-level permissions.
In cyber security, privileged apps matter because they sit much closer to the operating system than normal apps. If an attacker can tamper with firmware or the system image, malicious code may be planted to look like a legitimate privileged app, making simple uninstall steps ineffective and giving the malware persistence across reboots. Defenders look for this risk with boot integrity checks, app signature validation, device attestation, and clean reflashing of trusted images.
