Privileged API

An interface that performs sensitive actions and should be tightly restricted.

A privileged API is an application interface that can perform sensitive operations, such as changing access policy, creating accounts, reading secrets, or controlling system settings. Because these actions affect trust and security, the API should be tightly restricted to authenticated, authorized callers only.

In cyber security, privileged APIs matter because they often sit on the control plane of a product: if an attacker reaches them, they may be able to bypass normal user workflows and directly alter security decisions. A flaw such as broken access control, authentication bypass, or weak session validation can turn an admin-only function into an attack path. Defenders reduce risk by enforcing strong authorization checks on every request, isolating management interfaces, using mutual TLS or signed requests, limiting network exposure, and auditing sensitive API calls. In practice, compromise of a privileged API can be more damaging than a simple service crash because it can undermine the system that enforces trust for everything else behind it.
