Privilege scoping means limiting an account, service, or tool to only the access it needs for a specific job. Instead of broad admin rights, a scoped role may only read logs, reset one system, or access one case workspace. This reduces the damage an attacker can do if credentials are stolen or a trusted tool is abused.
In cyber security, privilege scoping is a core defense for incident response, cloud administration, and automation. Attackers often look for overprivileged accounts to move laterally, disable protections, or exfiltrate data. Defenders counter this by using least privilege, short-lived tokens, separate roles for sensitive actions, and frequent review of permissions. During investigations, tight scoping also helps preserve chain of custody and limits who can touch sensitive evidence or credentials.
