Private messaging scope

The set of users or rooms allowed to see a chat conversation.

Private messaging scope is the access boundary that defines which users, groups, or rooms can view a chat conversation. In a forum or collaboration platform, this scope should be enforced by authorization checks on every message read, search, notification, and export request. If the scope is wrong, a conversation intended for a small set of participants can become visible to bystanders, moderators, or even unauthenticated users.

Security teams care about this term because private chat often contains credentials, internal coordination, or personal data. Attackers may look for bugs that bypass membership checks, change room visibility, reuse message IDs across rooms, or leak content through previews and API responses. Defenders reduce risk with strict access-control logic, server-side validation of room membership, least-privilege moderation roles, and logging that highlights unusual reads or scope changes. In practice, private messaging scope is a trust boundary: if it fails, confidentiality fails with it.
