Pricing tier

one of several price levels offered for the same product.

A pricing tier is one of several price levels for the same product or service. In cyber security, tiers are common in SaaS platforms, cloud services, and security tools, where each plan may include different limits, features, support levels, or access controls.

Pricing tiers matter because they shape both risk and defense. A lower tier may disable logs, shorten retention, cap API calls, or restrict alerts, which can limit visibility during an investigation. A higher tier may unlock stronger monitoring, SSO, audit trails, or compliance features. Attackers can also abuse tiered systems by probing free or basic plans for weaker rate limits, reduced verification, or missing protections. For defenders, clear tier design and entitlement enforcement help ensure users only get the capabilities they paid for, while sensitive security functions remain properly controlled.
