Predictive analysis is the use of patterns, statistics, and machine-learning models to estimate likely outcomes or relationships from data. In cyber security, it helps defenders spot probable future events, such as phishing targets, attack paths, account compromise, or malware spread, before they fully unfold. It can also be applied offensively, where attackers use public signals, past breaches, or platform behavior to choose better targets and time their activity.
The security risk is not only in prediction itself, but in what happens when many small facts are combined. Open-source records, logs, metadata, and user activity can be fed into models that infer sensitive patterns, even when each input seems harmless alone. Defenders use predictive analysis for threat intelligence, anomaly detection, and risk scoring, but they must control data quality, access, and model outputs. Poorly governed models can leak clues, overfit to sensitive data, or amplify inference risk.
