Pre-authentication exploit

An attack that works before a login check succeeds.

A pre-authentication exploit is an attack that succeeds before a login check is completed. Instead of stealing valid credentials or bypassing a password prompt later, the attacker abuses a flaw in the service’s exposed code path to gain access first. This makes the bug especially dangerous in internet-facing systems such as gateways, VPN appliances, and web applications.

In cyber security, pre-authentication bugs matter because they remove the normal trust barrier. They can let an attacker execute code, read data, or take administrative control without any user account. Defenders look for these issues in public-facing interfaces, patch them quickly, and monitor for unusual files, processes, or network activity after exposure. In real attacks, a pre-auth exploit often becomes the entry point for persistence, internal pivoting, and broader compromise of the network.
