PPAs, or power purchase agreements, are contracts that set the terms for selling electricity from a project to a buyer. They usually define pricing, delivery volumes, contract length, curtailment rules, and other commercial conditions. In renewable-energy businesses, PPAs are often among the most sensitive documents because they reveal revenue assumptions, negotiation positions, and counterparty relationships.
From a cyber-security perspective, leaked PPAs can be valuable to attackers even if no operational systems are touched. They can help with extortion, competitive intelligence, and follow-on fraud by exposing how a project is financed and monetized. In real attacks, PPAs are often taken from shared drives, contract repositories, or project folders alongside financial models and interconnection agreements. Defenders reduce this risk with tight access control, document classification, encryption, logging, and data loss prevention, so a breach of one repository does not expose the full commercial picture.
