POS terminal

a device used to accept electronic payments at the point of sale.

A POS terminal is a point-of-sale device that accepts electronic payments, such as card or mobile transactions, in a shop, restaurant, or other checkout setting. Modern POS terminals often run general-purpose operating systems, connect to Wi-Fi or cellular networks, and exchange data with payment processors and bank systems.

In cyber security, POS terminals matter because they sit on the boundary between customer payment data and business systems. If attackers compromise a terminal, they may try to steal card data, alter transactions, install malware, or use the device as a foothold into the merchant network. Defenders therefore treat POS terminals as managed endpoints: they restrict access, keep firmware and apps updated, segment networks, monitor logs, and verify that payment software and settlement flows are intact. Strong configuration and auditing help reduce fraud and service disruption.
