POS Android

a payment terminal built on the Android operating system.

POS Android is a payment terminal that runs the Android operating system instead of a proprietary embedded firmware. It is used to accept card and contactless payments, often with extra features such as apps, Wi-Fi, 4G, SIM connectivity, and receipt printing. Because it is Android-based, the device can support richer interfaces and remote management, but it also inherits a broader software stack than a simple card reader.

In cyber security, that broader stack matters. Android POS devices can be targeted through malicious apps, weak device configuration, outdated operating system builds, or unsafe sideloading. Attackers may try to tamper with payment flows, steal credentials, or persist on the device; defenders rely on kiosk mode, application allowlisting, MDM, timely patching, encrypted communications, and separation of payment functions from general-purpose apps. In practice, the security of a POS Android terminal depends as much on administration as on the hardware itself.
