Policy automation is the software-assisted handling of security rule updates, reviews, and enforcement. In firewall and network access control environments, it helps teams manage large rule sets without relying on every change being checked by hand. That matters because manual policy work is slow, error-prone, and easy to lose track of as exceptions and temporary rules accumulate.
In defense, policy automation can compare proposed changes against approved standards, flag conflicts, detect configuration drift, and apply repeatable controls after review. In attacks, the same area is sensitive because a small rule change can quietly widen exposure or weaken segmentation. Good automation makes those changes visible, auditable, and harder to abuse, while also helping security teams respond faster and keep policy aligned with intent.
