Policentric means spread across multiple centers rather than concentrated in one dominant hub. In cyber security, this describes systems, networks, or infrastructure that are distributed across several sites, regions, or administrative centers instead of relying on a single location.
This matters because concentration creates a single point of failure: one outage, policy change, or successful attack can disrupt many services at once. A policentric design can improve resilience by adding redundancy, local autonomy, and multiple recovery paths. But it also adds operational complexity, since defenders must secure more sites, coordinate logging and access control, and keep configuration consistent. Attackers may also exploit differences between centers, such as uneven patching or weaker regional controls. In practice, policentric thinking appears in cloud architecture, data center planning, and disaster recovery strategies that spread critical workloads across several trusted locations.
