Pointer personalization refers to user settings that change the mouse cursor’s appearance or behavior, such as size, color, speed, trails, or visibility. These options are part of the desktop experience, but they also affect how reliably users can control a system, especially on shared or accessibility-sensitive workstations.
In cyber security, pointer personalization matters because changes to input settings can reveal two very different situations: a harmless servicing regression or deliberate tampering. A patch may reset preferences, creating confusion and helpdesk noise without any breach. In an attack, malware or remote-access tools may alter cursor behavior to confuse the user, hide activity, or interfere with navigation while other actions take place. Defenders can monitor for unexpected setting changes, compare them against approved baselines, and verify whether updates, policies, or unauthorized software caused the change. Treating pointer settings as part of endpoint state helps teams spot both quality issues and suspicious manipulation.
