A plugin ecosystem is the extension model around an application that lets users add new features through add-ons, modules, or plugins. It is common in browsers, editors, and server tools because it makes software flexible without changing the core program. On Windows, some applications load plugin code directly from DLL files or from configured plugin directories.
This matters in cyber security because the same trust that makes plugins convenient can be abused. If users install add-ons from unverified sources, attackers can disguise malware as a legitimate extension, then have the host application load it as normal code. Defenders reduce this risk with signed plugins, allowlisted repositories, restricted install paths, application control, and user training to avoid sideloading. In practice, plugin ecosystems are a frequent place where trust abuse replaces a technical exploit.
