Plugin Admin is Notepad++’s built-in plugin manager for installing, updating, and removing extensions. In normal use, it helps users expand the editor with trusted add-ons without manually handling DLL files or searching for downloads elsewhere. Because Notepad++ plugins are loaded as code, Plugin Admin sits at an important trust boundary: it controls which libraries enter the application’s plugin path.
In attacks, that same convenience can be abused if a malicious DLL is made to look like a plugin or if users install extensions from untrusted sources. Once loaded, the code runs inside a legitimate process and can blend in with normal behavior, making detection harder. For defense, security teams should prefer the official plugin catalog, review plugin origin and signatures, and monitor for unexpected DLLs in plugin directories or editor processes loading modules from user-writable locations.
