Plotter

a device that moves a pen or head with controlled precision to create drawings or output.

A plotter is an output device that moves a pen, cutting head, or similar tool with precise, repeatable motion to draw lines or produce specialized graphics. Unlike a standard printer, it is designed for controlled paths and fine positional accuracy, which makes it useful for technical drawings, signage, and other precision output.

In cyber security, plotters matter as managed peripherals. Any device connected by USB, serial, or network can become part of the attack surface if it is untrusted, misconfigured, or exposed through the host system. Attackers may abuse the workstation or print workflow around a plotter to access documents, stage data exfiltration, or hide activity inside legitimate print jobs. Defenders reduce risk by inventorying devices, limiting driver installation, segmenting print infrastructure, and monitoring unusual job volume or network traffic. The key security idea is simple: even an ordinary output device can carry sensitive data and should be treated like any other endpoint.
