Playback path

The sequence of software and device steps used to deliver video to a screen.

A playback path is the full sequence of software and device steps that turns a video request into an image on the screen. In a streaming setup, that can include the browser or app, the operating system, codecs, DRM modules, graphics drivers, hardware decoders, and the display pipeline. Each layer must cooperate for the stream to play at the allowed quality.

It matters in cyber security because every step in the path is a trust boundary. Streaming services use the playback path to enforce policy, check device capability, and protect licensed media. Attackers may try to tamper with a client, bypass DRM, intercept decrypted frames, or force a weaker path that exposes content. Defenders harden the path with code signing, device attestation, encrypted media pipelines, and access checks that fail safely by reducing quality instead of breaking playback.
