The Play Integrity API is an Android integrity service from Google that lets an app ask whether the current device and app environment look trustworthy. It can return signals about things like app authenticity, device integrity, and whether the environment appears to be rooted, tampered with, or otherwise high risk.
Security teams use these signals to reduce fraud, block risky sessions, and decide when to step up authentication. In mobile banking, for example, an app may combine Play Integrity results with server-side checks, transaction monitoring, and behavioral analytics before allowing sensitive actions.
It matters because client-side trust can be manipulated on compromised devices. Malware may patch an app, hide suspicious behavior, or try to spoof a clean environment. Play Integrity is not a complete defense by itself, but it helps defenders detect when the phone should not be treated as a reliable witness.
