Platform migration

The process of moving workloads, tools, or teams from one computing environment to another.

Platform migration is the process of moving workloads, tools, data, or teams from one computing environment to another, such as from a proprietary workstation stack to Linux, from on-premises servers to cloud infrastructure, or from one security product to a different one. In cyber security, migration matters because it changes the trust boundaries around an environment: authentication, logging, patching, access control, and network rules all have to be re-established and verified.

Attackers often benefit from migrations because they create temporary gaps, inconsistent configurations, and forgotten legacy systems. A partially moved service may keep old credentials, weak defaults, or exposed management interfaces. Defenders use migration as a chance to harden systems, standardize build images, improve visibility, and reduce vendor lock-in. A careful migration plan includes inventory, testing, rollback options, and validation of security controls before and after cutover. In practice, platform migration is less about moving software and more about preserving security while the underlying environment changes.
