Plan9 is a lightweight file-sharing protocol used in some virtual machine platforms to expose host folders to a guest operating system. In Hyper-V environments, it can support host-to-guest folder integration, letting a VM read or write files on the host through a shared interface rather than a full network file server.
In cyber security, that convenience is also a trust boundary. Shared folders can move data, scripts, and tools between host and guest, so a misconfigured Plan9 share may expand the impact of malware inside a VM or expose sensitive host files to a compromised guest. Defenders use it for controlled file exchange, test environments, and automation, but they should limit access, review permissions, and disable the feature when it is not needed. In incident response, checking these shares matters because they can become a path for data staging or lateral movement within virtualized setups.
