In cyber security, placement is the location of a control, sensor, asset, or malicious component within a system, network, or workflow. Where something sits often matters as much as what it does. A log source placed on one server may record only local activity, while the same source at a network choke point can reveal scans, lateral movement, or data exfiltration.
Placement affects visibility, reach, and risk. Defenders place firewalls, EDR agents, authentication checks, and monitoring tools where they will cover the most critical paths without creating blind spots. Attackers also rely on placement when they drop malware into startup folders, scheduled tasks, web roots, or trusted scripts so it runs early and blends in. Good security design treats placement as a control decision: put defenses where they can see the right traffic and protect the most valuable systems, and avoid leaving key actions unobserved.
