Physically secure location

A controlled environment where data may face different protection requirements than in remote or exposed settings.

A physically secure location is a controlled space where sensitive systems or data are protected by physical access controls such as locks, badges, surveillance, guards, and restricted entry. In CJIS-style environments, data inside such a location may be subject to different handling requirements than data stored or accessed from remote, shared, or public settings.

This matters because cyber security is not only about software controls. If an attacker can enter a room, steal a device, tamper with hardware, or connect unauthorized equipment, they may bypass encryption, authentication, and network defenses. Defenders use physically secure locations to reduce those risks, support trusted storage and processing, and define clear trust boundaries for data flow, backup handling, and privileged access. In practice, the label helps determine where extra controls are needed when data leaves the secure area, moves across a network, or is accessed by users outside that controlled environment.
