Photovoltaic technology converts sunlight into electricity using solar cells, usually in panels linked to inverters, batteries, and monitoring software. In security terms, it is not just a power source: it is part of an operational technology environment that can include remote management, networked sensors, and cloud dashboards.
It matters because photovoltaic systems are often connected to corporate or critical infrastructure networks. Attackers may target weak passwords, exposed web portals, or insecure devices to disrupt generation, alter settings, hide faults, or pivot into other systems. Defenders protect these assets by segmenting networks, hardening inverter and monitoring interfaces, updating firmware, and watching for unusual command or telemetry changes. Secure photovoltaic deployments improve resilience, but they still need the same control and monitoring as any other connected industrial system.
