Persistent control

Access that remains effective after normal administrative changes or reboots.

Persistent control is access or influence over a system that survives routine resets, password changes, privilege cleanup, or reboots. In cyber security, it matters because a breach is far more serious when an attacker can keep using the system after defenders think they have fixed it. Rather than a one-time intrusion, persistent control lets an intruder return, maintain privileged access, or keep managing security settings.

Attackers achieve this by turning limited access into lasting admin rights, creating hidden accounts, changing roles, installing services, or altering management interfaces and automation. Defenders counter it by reviewing privileged accounts, checking for unexpected role grants, auditing administrative APIs, and validating systems after patches or restarts. If control persists, the incident is not contained.
