A permission scheme is the rule set that decides who or what can access a Jira project, issue, or action. It maps users, groups, roles, and service accounts to specific rights such as viewing tickets, editing fields, moving workflow states, or administering a project. In practice, it is the access-control layer that keeps collaboration tools usable without making every object visible to everyone.
Permission schemes matter in cyber security because they enforce least privilege and reduce the damage from compromised accounts, overbroad service credentials, or misconfigured automation. In agentic software, the same controls determine whether an AI agent can only read a narrow project slice or can also update issues and trigger workflow changes. Attackers often exploit weak permission design by abusing inherited access, stale roles, or overly trusted integrations. Defenders respond by reviewing schemes regularly, separating high-value projects, and limiting agent identities to the smallest necessary scope.
