Permission enforcement

The checks that decide whether a user or system is allowed to access data or perform an action.

Permission enforcement is the set of checks a system uses to decide whether a user, service, or process may read data, change settings, or trigger an action. It is the practical layer that turns an authorization policy into a real security control. A login proves identity; permission enforcement decides what that identity can actually do.

In cyber security, weak enforcement is a common cause of privilege escalation, data exposure, and unauthorized actions. Attackers look for cases where the application trusts a client, skips a server-side check, or applies rules inconsistently across endpoints, roles, or federated peers. Defenders rely on strict, centralized checks to verify every request, especially for sensitive operations and cross-system traffic. In platforms like Mastodon, correct permission enforcement is critical because server-to-server requests can cross trust boundaries; one missed check can let untrusted content or actions flow where they should be blocked.
